Configure Map-Related Controls

Geocortex Printing provides a variety of controls related specifically to the map. The most important of these is the Map control itself, which includes the map from the user's current session in the print output. Geocortex Printing also has controls for the legend, scale bar, overview map, and more.

Map Control

The Map control includes the map from the user's session in the print output. The user specifies the area to print and the scale to use. The output shows the visible layers and any markup and selections that the user has made.

Within Print Designer, there is no user session with a map, so the control on the design surface shows a placeholder map. The Preview uses a sample map service.

Configuration

To use a Map control in a print template, add the control to the layout. No further configuration is required. When the print is generated, Geocortex Printing automatically gets the map, the map's state, and the user's configuration from the host application to create the map image.

Overview Map Control

The Overview Map control shows the main map's extent within the larger geographic context. An overview map shows the visible basemaps only. It does not show graphics layers or the user's markup or selections.

Within Print Designer, the control on the design surface shows the placeholder map used by the Map control. The Preview uses the same sample map service as the Map control.

Configuration

Default settings for the Overview Map control

The following settings for the Overview Map control are in the Actions section of the Properties panel:

Legend Control

The Legend control includes the map legend in the print output.

The Legend control works with 2D maps only. If you print a 3D web scene from a Web AppBuilder app, the Legend control will be blank.

In order for a layer to show in the legend:

The legend fills the space provided by the Legend control. If the control isn't large enough to show the entire legend, the legend will be cut off.

Smart Filtering

By default, the legend shows every symbol for a layer, regardless of whether the symbol appears in the extent being printed. You can configure a Legend control to include only those symbols that appear in the extent. This is called Smart Filtering.

Smart Filtering can shorten the legend's list of symbols considerably. This helps to prevent the legend from being cut off if the control isn't large enough to show all the symbols. It also makes it easier for the end user to locate a particular symbol in the legend.

In order for a layer's symbols to be filtered:
